Free Printable Christmas Scavenger Hunt for Kids

Last updated on December 5th, 2025 at 03:23 pm

If your December looks anything like mine, you’re probably juggling school events, holiday prep, and trying to keep your kids from bouncing off the walls. It’s a lot. That’s why I love having simple, no prep activities on hand that actually entertain the kids for a few minutes without making more work for me.

This Christmas scavenger hunt is one of my favorite holiday activities to pull out in a pinch. It’s fun, easy to use, and works whether you’re stuck inside on a snowy afternoon, need something for a class party, or just want to create a little holiday magic at home without adding to your mental load.

I’ve put together three versions of the Christmas scavenger hunt so you can choose what fits your family best. There’s a picture-based hunt for little kids, a fun indoor version for days you’re stuck inside, and a more challenging list for older kids who like a bit of a task. Each one is easy to use and gives you a fun way to enjoy the season together.

Let’s take a look at what’s included and how to use it.

How a Christmas Scavenger Hunt Adds to the Season

There’s already a lot going on during the holidays, but sometimes the simplest things end up being the most memorable. A scavenger hunt gives kids a reason to slow down and really notice what’s around them — whether that’s decorations, family traditions, or just the little bits of magic that make this season special.

It’s also one of those rare activities that works for different ages at the same time. Toddlers can look for pictures, older kids can take on a challenge, and everyone gets to feel involved. No screens, no mess, and no extra stress for you.

How to Use The Scavenger Hunt This Holiday Season

One of the best things about this scavenger hunt is how easy it is to make it work with whatever your day looks like. Here are a few ways we’ve used it at home.

  • On a snow day when you’re stuck inside
  • During winter break as a screen-free activity
  • At a holiday party with friends or cousins
  • In the classroom as an easy party game
  • Christmas Eve while you’re trying to finish wrapping gifts
  • While decorating to turn it into a little game

You can use it once or keep bringing it back throughout the holiday season.

What’s Included in the Free Printable Set

The Christmas scavenger hunt PDF comes with three versions to cover different ages and situations:

1. Picture-Based Hunt for Younger Kids

Great for toddlers and preschoolers who aren’t reading yet. They’ll search for things like Santa, a Christmas tree, or jingle bells using pictures they can recognize and point to.

2. Indoor Scavenger Hunt Cards

This one turns it into a little hide-and-seek game. You cut out the cards, hide them around the house, and let the kids find them. It’s super easy and surprisingly fun. Great for when you just need to keep them busy for a bit.

3. Challenge List for Older Kids

A written version for kids who can read. It includes more detailed items, but everything is still something you’d find around most homes during December like mistletoe, a nativity scene, or a Christmas card.

Tips for Doing the Hunt with Younger Kids

If you’re using this with toddlers or preschoolers, here are a few ways to keep it age appropriate:

  • Use the visual version so they don’t need help reading
  • Give them stickers or crayons to mark what they find
  • Let them go at their own pace — no need to find it all
  • Team them up with an older sibling for a sweet buddy system
  • Chances are they will get bored so if they find five things and have fun count it as a win!

Ideas for Older Kids (Yes, They’ll Still Enjoy It)

Older kids love a challenge. Here’s how to make it fun for them:

  • Set a timer and turn it into a race
  • Let them take photos of each item for a phone-friendly twist
  • Offer a small prize, even if it’s just picking the movie for the night
  • Pair them with a younger sibling for some teamwork
  • Use it as a class or group game with teams

This version works really well when you’ve got a mix of ages at home and need something that feels “big kid” approved.

Easy Indoor Christmas Scavenger Hunt Setup for Snow Days

The indoor version with printable cards is probably my favorite because it’s so easy. Just print, cut, and hide them around the house. You can be as creative or basic as you want with where you put them.

Use it:

  • On a snowy or just cold day
  • After school when everyone needs a break
  • Before bedtime to calm things down
  • During a playdate or family holiday gathering

It gives you a break and gives them something fun to do that doesn’t involve cleaning up slime afterward.

Hosting a Holiday Party or Classroom Celebration?

This Christmas scavenger hunt is one of those activities you can print and bring to any gathering without needing a backup plan. No supplies to buy, no fancy setup needed.

Just hand out the version that fits the group and let them go. Great for:

  • Class parties
  • Homeschool co-ops
  • Family holiday dinners
  • Kids’ tables at Christmas events

It’s quick to prep and keeps kids entertained while grown-ups tackle everything else on the to-do list.
