How to Plan a “First Year Down” Football First Birthday Party

Nothing prepares you for how fast that first year goes. One minute they are a newborn and the next you are planning a birthday, wondering how you got here so quickly.

I love planning parties, so once I started thinking about his first birthday, I fell right down the rabbit hole of all the cute ideas for little boys. There are so many fun first birthday party themes you can choose from, but with our family’s love for football and a fall birthday, the choice of First Year Down was the perfect fit!

I grew up in a football house with a dad who played in college, so the sound of a game on in the background always felt normal to me. Now with two boys, I cannot help but picture at least one of them letting me live out my dream of being a football mom someday. A girl can hope!

And with his birthday landing right in the middle of the season, it just made sense.

The fun thing about a football theme is that you can take it in so many different directions. I ended up choosing the details that fit our style, but you can easily take this theme in a totally different direction. So I am sharing exactly what we did for our First Year Down party, and I will also include other ideas you can use to fit your own style and space. This post also includes extra football first birthday ideas if you want even more inspiration.

How to Host a First Year Down Birthday Party

Invitations

Etsy will always be my favorite spot for cute invitations. For less than five dollars you can find ready to use designs that take only a few minutes to customize with your info and send out.

The time saved is worth every penny in my opinion, especially when there are so many adorable options to choose from. Here are a few of my favorite First Year Down themed first birthday invitations:

I sent our invitations out digitally through text to friends and family to save on postage, but they are just as easy to print and mail if you prefer. Just be sure to send them with enough time for everyone to receive them and RSVP.

First Birthday Venue Ideas

For first birthdays I love hosting parties at home because everything feels relaxed and comfortable. It is so nice to set up on my own timeline and not worry about hauling decorations and my kids to another location. Trust me, I have made that mistake before and instantly regretted it.

But there are plenty of great places to host a football themed birthday if home is not your ideal spot.

Here are a few options that work well:

  • Your backyard for extra space and easy cleanup
  • A local park for bigger groups and plenty of open room
  • A community room or clubhouse
  • A rented indoor play space if you want something toddler friendly
  • A family member’s home if they have more space to work with

Football themes are flexible, so you can make them work in almost any setting. With a little bit of decoration and some creativity, you can turn just about any space into a game day party spot. All you really need is a place for food, a play area for the kids, and a corner for photos, and the theme comes together easily.

First Year Down Decorations

When I started planning this party, the decor was the part I got the most excited about. A football theme works with so many colors and styles, so you can keep it simple or go all out. I went with the classic green, brown, and white look, but there are a ton of ways to make this theme fit your own space and budget.

If you want even more DIY football birthday inspiration, small, creative details can make a huge difference without adding much effort.

Front Door Decor

I love setting the tone for a party right at the front door. A simple sign that matches your invitation is an easy way to tie everything together, and it looks adorable as guests walk in. You can print one at home and pop it in a frame or mount it on foam board.

Balloons at the door are always a hit too. A small cluster in green, brown, and white instantly gives a game day feel. If you want to add one more touch, a little strip of turf or a toy football by the entrance makes the theme clear before anyone even steps inside.

Backdrop and Photo Area

For our backdrop, my husband built an arch that I can reuse for future parties. I was also planning two baby showers at the time, so it has gotten its money worth out of it! We painted it a simple white, but you can easily pick any color that fits your theme.

I added a balloon arch and learned how to put it together by watching way too many TikTok videos. For doing it on my own, I think it turned out pretty well. To finish the look, I made a little decal in Canva that tied everything together.

Other ideas you could try:

  • A painted butcher paper backdrop
  • Streamers in you favorite team colors
  • A printed backdrop
  • Metal arches with spandex covers.

Balloon Garland

For the balloon garland I used this kit on Amazon which made it so much easier and affordable. It even came with extra balloons that I did not end up using, but they would have been perfect if I wanted a fuller look or in other locations for added décor.

After watching a few tutorial videos, I decided to use fishing line instead of the supplies that came in the kit, and it worked so well. Balloon garlands always look complicated, but once you start, they come together surprisingly easily.

Other ideas with balloons:

  • A number one balloon in team colors
  • Football shaped balloons
  • Clustered balloons by the entryway
  • Balloons tied to a highchair for photos

If you plan to make a garland yourself, a balloon pump is a must. I used this one, and it saved me so much time and breath, literally.

Tableware and Small Details

Now this is where I feel like the whole party really came together. I lucked out at Hobby Lobby’s fall football sale right before the party and picked up plates and napkins for such a good price. I added a few new pieces to my collection of football themed serving dishes, and everything started to come together.

The real finishing touch was the signs I made in Canva. I printed them at home and slipped them into acrylic frames for the table, and they added so much personality without much extra effort.

There are so many fun ways to bring a football theme to life. You can use turf as a table runner, add mini foam fingers or pom poms for a pop of color, sprinkle in a few toy footballs, or label your food with fun game day names.

Etsy has so many creators who sell adorable printable signs, or you can easily make your own.

Even simple touches like striped straws, themed toothpicks, or a bowl of snacks in your team colors can make the whole table feel intentional. It is amazing how quickly the theme comes together once you start layering in those little elements.

High Chair and Smash Cake Area

The smash cake is always my favorite part of a first birthday. My photo backdrop doubled as our cake smash spot, but having a separate little area decorated in the First Year Down theme would work just as well.

I added a homemade banner using this burlap banner and some ribbon to his high chair and a small cake topper to his football themed smash cake, and it was perfect for the big moment.

Food

For the food, I tried to keep things easy and game day inspired. My goal was to serve food that felt like you were enjoying a plate of finger foods while watching a football game on a Saturday, but still keep in mind that several young kids would be at the party.

We served sliders, fruit, veggies with dip, chips, and little wienies, all easy things that both kids and adults will actually eat. I also made chocolate covered strawberries decorated like little footballs along with cake pops designed to look like footballs and mini football fields. The big hit of the day was the football field dip. It is basically a seven-layer dip styled to look like a football field.

If you want to add a little more to your table, you could do a snack mix in team colors, sandwiches cut with a football shaped cookie cutter, or even a small nacho station. All are easy to put together and can feed a crowd.

No matter what you serve, a few themed details can really pull everything together. Food labels, fun names, or even a couple of printable signs will make the whole table feel complete.

Cake Smash

For the cake smash, we set my son’s highchair right in front of our First Year Down backdrop, added the little banner I made, and let him go for it. I never get too fancy with smash cakes because they are only going to be destroyed, but I did make a dark chocolate frosting (I used this recipe and it was incredible) so it looked like a football. I added a cute cake topper on top, and it worked perfectly.

Honestly, I think he would have loved anything I put in front of him, but he definitely enjoyed that cake. The pictures from that moment ended up being some of my favorites from the whole day.

First Year Down Outfit Ideas

In all honesty, life got the best of me and I completely ran out of time to order a cute outfit for him. I had every intention of getting a custom jersey with his name on it or finding something football themed, but it just did not happen. He ended up wearing the same shirt and shorts that his older brother wore for his first birthday, and honestly it felt really sentimental.

If you want something more themed for your own party, there are so many adorable outfit options. You can go with a tiny jersey, a First Year Down onesie, or a simple brown romper that gives that cute football look without being over the top.

A lot of parents also love doing a quick smash cake photo shoot before the party. You can dress your little one in a special outfit for that session and then use those photos as part of your party decor. It is such a fun way to personalize the space.

Tips for Planning a First Year Down Birthday Party

  • This theme is easy to recreate with simple football themed party supplies you already have at home. Throw pillows in team colors, serving trays you already use for game days, or even a toy football your kids already play with could all work for decor. Before you shop, take a quick look around your house. You might be surprised how much fits the First Year Down theme.

  • Pick a few focal points and let the rest stay simple. A cute backdrop, a fun food table, or a themed smash cake area can carry the whole party. You do not need every corner decorated. Choose one or two spots to style and let everything be.

  • Mix DIY with store bought. You can print signs at home, make a simple banner, or create labels in Canva, then pair those with affordable finds from Amazon or Etsy.

  • Keep food easy. First birthday parties run on finger foods, fruit, and snacks the kids will actually eat. A few themed details make the table look thoughtful without too much extra work. You do not need a full menu to make it feel like a party.

  • Borrow before you buy. Family and friends often have serving pieces, football themed decor, or even balloons left from another party. It is an easy way to save a little money and cut down on clutter.

  • Remember the whole point. You are celebrating one year with your sweet baby. Do what feels fun for you, skip what stresses you out, and enjoy the day. First birthdays are more about the memories than the decorations, and you will look back on this one with so much love.

Wrapping Up

Planning this First Year Down birthday was such a fun way to celebrate our boy and everything he has grown into this past year. It took some work, but seeing him surrounded by the people who love him made every bit of it worth it. The little details, the snacks, the decorations, and the cake smash all came together to create a day that felt so sweet and special.

If you are planning your own football themed first birthday, I hope this gives you ideas you can easily make your own. Keep what fits your family, skip what feels like too much, and enjoy the season you are in. Your little one only turns one once, and it is such a gift to celebrate that milestone in a way that feels right for you.

Here is to your First Year Down and all the good things ahead.
