Reading a Christmas book together each night is a highlight of my holiday season. It is a Christmas tradition I have had since I was little, and I love passing it along to my own kids. I can’t believe that the time for all the holiday spirit is finally here!
I remember the excitement each year when my mom would get down the boxes of Christmas decorations to put up around the house. While we loved helping with all the decorations, my favorite was getting to the bottom of the box and finding all the Christmas books she brought out around Thanksgiving time each year.
Now I want to pass that Christmas tradition along to my son and fill his bookshelf up with fun holiday books each winter season. There are so many great titles out there it can be hard to pick just a few for your home.
Are you ready to get into the holiday spirit but aren’t sure which books to read with your little one? These are some of our favorites over the years that offer heart-warming stories, colorful illustrations, and teach lessons of the true meaning of Christmas to kids.

Why Christmas Books Matter
Before we get into the list of our top picks of Christmas books for kids, it’s important to talk about why reading holiday books to our kids is so important.
These stories, beyond being enchanting tales of holiday magic, are like secret messengers delivering some of life’s most profound lessons straight to our children’s hearts.
Sure, we’ve got Santa’s sleigh rides and the escapades of mischievous elves to keep them entertained (and trust me, those are loads of fun), but these books are doing something special. They’re gently teaching our kids about kindness, generosity, and the genuine meaning of Christmas, all while they’re lost in the wonder of the season.
What’s truly remarkable is that our kiddos soak in these lessons without even realizing it. They’re discovering the joy of giving, the warmth of family, and the significance of the traditions that bring us all together. So, when we snuggle up with a Christmas book, we’re not just reading a story; we’re sharing the wisdom and wonder of the holiday season. It’s like a cherished gift that keeps on giving, year after year.
Now there is the age-old phrase that goes “you should never judge a book by its cover”. Well, I would challenge you to absolutely judge it by the cover. I think you can learn a lot about a book and its contents just based on the title, synopsis, and cover art, especially children’s books.
Look for illustrations or images that resonate with the holiday spirit and capture your child’s attention. Vibrant colors, joyful characters, and scenes that evoke the magic of Christmas can make the reading experience all the more enchanting.
But there’s more to selecting the ideal Christmas book than just a captivating cover. As a parent, you also want to ensure that the book carries the messages and values you want to teach to your children during this special season. Christmas stories often hold valuable life lessons like kindness, generosity, and the importance of family and community. Before making your choice, take a moment to flip through the pages or read the book’s synopsis to understand the central themes. Are these the messages you want your child to absorb during the holiday season? Does the story align with your family’s values?
Remember, the best Christmas books not only entertain but also educate and inspire. So, when you choose that perfect book with a cover that captures your child’s imagination and a story that imparts the right lessons, you’re not just gifting them a book; you’re giving them the gift of cherished memories and lasting values that will stay with them for years to come.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Christmas Books for Kids
When you’re on the hunt for the perfect Christmas books for your little ones, it’s just like finding that ideal holiday outfit – it needs to fit just right! So, let’s chat about what to keep in mind when you’re picking out those festive reads.
First things first, think about your kiddo’s age. You want a book that’s just the right level for them, so they can enjoy and understand the story without getting frustrated. Nobody wants to deal with “I don’t get it, Mom!”
Next up, what’s the book all about? Christmas tales often sneak in some wonderful life lessons about being kind, generous, and all that warm-and-fuzzy stuff. Take a peek inside or read a summary to make sure the book lines up with the values you want to share with your little ones during the holiday season.
Oh, and don’t forget the pictures! Beautiful illustrations can make a book truly come to life for your child. You want those images to be as magical as the story itself.
Lastly, keep an eye out for books with fun extras like pop-ups or interactive features. Those can turn a simple reading session into a real adventure!

Christmas Book Advent Calendar
For an extra special way to spend Christmas reading these books with your kids, you can make an advent calendar for each day of December leading up to Christmas.
Here is how to start a Christmas Book Advent Calendar:
- Select 25 Christmas books from this list or other titles you like. If you are on a budget try a local used bookstore or thrift store (you likely will have to start collecting several months in advance) or depending on your location you may be able to check some out from the library. (Be sure to check how long you can have the books for to avoid late fees)
- Find a fun way to display your advent calendar. You could wrap each book individually and put it under the tree with a number (perhaps create a “reading tree” designated for just the books.) Or you could use paper bags and line them up on a fireplace or windowsills.
- Each day in December let your kids open the corresponding book and read it together that night.
- Enjoy a different book each day and maybe read your favorites a few times over.
Advent calendars are a great way to get kids involved with the holidays and gives them something to look forward to. If 25 days is too much, try maybe the 12 days of Christmas. Or maybe each week give them a present with 2 books in it. This is a great tradition to start that can be modified to the needs of your individual family.
